English

The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of FinTech development on financial inclusion and economic growth in Iran over the period 2009–2025 by developing a model that examines the relationships among these variables. Data on financial inclusion and economic growth were collected from the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The present study is applied in terms of purpose and quantitative in terms of methodology. Given the structural fluctuations in the Iranian economy during the study period, including sanctions, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA, the COVID-19 pandemic, and changes in oil prices, the assumption of constant coefficients over time is not realistic. Therefore, time-varying linear regression models were employed using R software. The findings showed that the value share of FinTech had a positive and statistically significant effect on economic growth throughout the study period. The value share of FinTech also had a positive and statistically significant effect on financial inclusion from 2009 to 2021; however, this effect weakened and became statistically insignificant in the more recent years (2022–2025). This finding may indicate market saturation, changes in the quality of financial inclusion, and structural constraints in recent years. Inflation was identified as the most important factor adversely affecting both economic growth and financial inclusion, exerting a negative and statistically significant effect on both dependent variables in most years of the study period. The findings indicate that, in Iran, FinTech development, particularly when measured in terms of the economic value of digital transactions, can contribute to improvements in economic growth and financial inclusion.
