Abstract
Liquidity refers to the ease and speed of conversion into cash, which is considered an important characteristic of assets in financial markets. On the other hand, the contagion of illiquidity risk and the relationship between market liquidity and asset and industry liquidity are crucial issues for market participants. In this paper, the effect of market liquidity on industry liquidity is studied using a state-dependent (regime) approach through the estimation of a threshold model in a sample of 10 stock exchange industries during the period 2016-2017. The research findings confirm the existence of thresholds in the variable behavior model, meaning that the contagion of illiquidity from the market to industries varies in different market conditions, whether bullish, bearish, or normal. In fact, in a bearish market, this contagion is more severe than in an uptrend, and in both bullish and bearish markets, it is more significant than in a normal market.
